Leadership also means inspiring others to perform at their best. How do you identify this potential in a management assessment?
What does motivational capability mean?
Motivational capability describes the ability to inspire and engage people in an authentic way and to provide a sense of purpose. It is about creating conditions in which commitment, personal responsibility and willingness to perform can grow. In this sense motivation is not limited to triggering energy in individual projects but also includes sustaining this energy over longer periods of time.
Why is this relevant for leadership?
Without motivation, even the best strategies remain ineffective. Leaders who are able to motivate not only enhance productivity but also strengthen commitment and satisfaction within their team. They set impulses that go far beyond individual tasks and thus make a decisive contribution to an organisation’s performance and capacity for innovation.
How do we address this in management assessments at managerberater?
Within our diagnostic approach, the managerberater Business Review, we work with real-life situations drawn from the candidates’ professional context when assessing experienced managers with overall accountability for results. Based on candidates’ presentations and descriptions of their experiences, we challenge their statements with regard to motivational impact.
For high-potential candidates at a more junior level, we use scenarios in which candidates are required to win teams over to ambitious goals – under realistic conditions such as limited resources or divergent interests. Among other aspects, we evaluate:
- authenticity and credibility in communication
- the ability to convey purpose and clarity of objectives
- skill in addressing different motivational drivers within a team
- the sustainability of the motivational impulses created
A common practical misconception
Motivation is often confused with short-term enthusiasm. Effective leadership, however, aims to foster a stable, intrinsically driven willingness to perform.
