The media industry continues to evolve rapidly. Emerging technologies, artificial intelligence, and changing expectations from customers and employees alike are reshaping business models and redefining the capabilities required of professionals and leaders. Organisations must therefore identify and develop talent at an early stage to strengthen their long-term capability and future readiness. Against this backdrop, a leading media group engaged us to design and deliver a tailored Potential Assessment Centre. The objective was to identify employees with strong development potential for a strategic talent development programme.
Navigating Transformation: New Requirements for Professionals and Leaders
The dynamic nature of today’s media landscape requires professionals and leaders to embrace change, make effective use of new technologies, and bring together diverse perspectives. Alongside analytical and commercial thinking, learning agility, adaptability, and collaborative leadership have become increasingly important. Our Potential Assessment therefore focused on identifying individuals with the capability to actively shape transformation while demonstrating responsibility, empathy, and values-based leadership.
Our Approach: Understanding Culture and Engaging Stakeholders
At the outset of the project, we conducted an in-depth analysis of the organisation’s culture and engaged with key stakeholders, leaders, and employees to gain valuable insights into the organisation’s strategic priorities and future requirements. These findings enabled us to develop a tailored competency profile reflecting the capabilities required of professionals and leaders in a rapidly changing media environment. Our central question was: which competencies are essential today—and in the future—to successfully navigate organisational transformation?
The Potential Assessment Centre: A Structured Approach to Talent Identification
Based on the competency profile, we designed a multimodal Potential Assessment Centre combining a range of evidence-based assessment methods to provide a comprehensive evaluation of participants:
- Self-presentations and structured interviews exploring professional experience, career aspirations, and development potential
- Peer-to-peer simulations assessing communication, collaboration, and interpersonal effectiveness
- Business cases evaluating analytical thinking, strategic judgement, and decision-making
- Complex problem-solving exercises examining structured thinking, prioritisation, and performance under time pressure
All assessment exercises were closely aligned with realistic workplace challenges, enabling a differentiated evaluation of participants’ potential from multiple perspectives. Throughout the process, participants were supported by leaders from the client organisation, HR professionals, and our experienced consultants. This collaborative approach ensured robust observations combined with constructive, development-oriented feedback.
Added Value: Targeted Development of Professional and Leadership Talent
One of the key outcomes of the Potential Assessment Centre was an individual analysis of each participant’s strengths and development areas. These insights formed the basis for tailored development measures designed to build on existing strengths while addressing identified development needs. This approach encourages personal ownership of development and provides a solid foundation for sustainable growth.
In addition, the anonymised and consolidated results provided the HR function with valuable insights to support strategic talent and organisational development. Individual and group-wide competency needs could be identified and incorporated into the design of future development initiatives, enabling learning investments to be targeted where they would create the greatest impact.
Fazit: Zukunftsfähige Kompetenzentwicklung in der Medienbranche
This project demonstrates the value that tailored Potential Assessments can bring to the development of professionals and leaders. By combining a deep understanding of organisational culture, close stakeholder engagement, and future-oriented competency assessment, we helped identify high-potential talent while creating meaningful impulses for both individual and organisational development.
